2024 VW Tiguan Redesign: What We Know and What We Expect

The new generation of VW’s compact crossover is on the way. After almost eight years in production, the current model starts to look a little bit old, despite the updates. Simply, this is the most competitive segment in the automotive market, where you need to be fresh to be competitive. The CR-V has just been redesigned, while most other rivals are also younger than VW’s model. That’s why the 2024 VW Tiguan is coming completely redesigned, with comprehensive updates in various aspects of the car.

Still, don’t expect to see anything radical. VW is known as a company that likes to play safe and introduced evolutionary changes. For example, the platform will remain the same, as well as the wheelbase. On the other hand, you may count on new, more attractive aesthetics, nicer interior design and some powertrain upgrades, which could include some sort of electrification as well.

The test mule has been driving around for a long time and most experts believe that the production model could arrive sometime in the second half of 2023.

2024 VW Tiguan Design

The 2024 VW Tiguan is coming completely redesigned and, as we already mentioned, most of the changes will be evolutionary, especially in terms of mechanics. The new model will also be based on a familiar MQB platform, though slightly updated, with certain suspension and chassis modifications that should improve the ride quality even more, even though the current model already offers composed handling. Of course, we also expect to see the implementation of some new technologies, especially when it comes to advanced driver assistance and safety features.

On the other hand, what’s expected to be completely new is the exterior design. At this point, the test mule still wears camouflage but the recent showing in public included a little bit different, a white cover that feels a little bit more transparent than before. VW engineers even did some drawings on the camo that resemble the outgoing model but we can clearly see that some interesting changes are on the way.

The first thing we noticed is that the new model feels a little bit larger. Despite the bigger size, most reports suggest no changes regarding the wheelbase, which means that the North American version will feature nearly 110 inches between the axles. Interestingly, the test mule seems less boxy than the current model, which indicates that the German manufacturer might go for a more elegant design approach this time.

Interior

The test mule has been driving around for a while but we haven’t managed to catch any photos of the interior. At this point, all we can do is rely on rumors and estimations and from what we can hear, the new model will look even more upscale. Of course, the biggest revisions will be made on the dashboard, which should utilize a new design, with more elegant aesthetics and even nicer materials. Also, many reports suggest that the center stack would be radically different, where the infotainment screen wouldn’t be strictly integrated anymore. Instead, it would be positioned a little bit higher and should feature a bit of a floating design.

On the other hand, the overall cabin layout won’t bring any radical changes. Considering the same wheelbase, we presume that the amount of passenger space will remain pretty similar, despite the increased overall dimensions. So, you may count on the same five-seat configuration, with plenty of room in both rows, while some sources suggest that the third row could be offered as an option. The cargo area should also offer above-average capacity, just like the current one does.

2024 VW Tiguan Engine

One of the biggest drawbacks of the current generation, at least in North America, is the powertrain offer. Namely, there is just one engine on offer, a familiar 2.0-liter turbo-four that puts out around 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. It doesn’t offer spectacular driving dynamics and it isn’t particularly efficient either. Logically,  we expect to see changes.

One of the most probable scenarios is to see this engine coupled with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, where a small electric motor would provide better driving dynamics and better fuel economy.

Also, we would like to see some new powertrain options on offer. Some sources speculate about a more powerful iteration of the turbo-four, with a max output of 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. That engine can be found under the hood of the Audi Q3, for example. Also, it’s not unrealistic to see a plug-in hybrid at some point.

2024 VW Tiguan Release Date and Price

The exact launch date of the all-new 2024 VW Tiguan is yet to be scheduled but we believe this could happen sometime in the second half of 2023. We estimate that the starting price will go around 27.500 dollars, while the competition is about to remain the same. Some of the models that come to mind are Nissan Rogue, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape etc.
