The current generation has been around since 2008, so it’s no wonder it feels outdated in many aspects. The interior looks old, the transmission lacks gears, and the engine is thirsty. That’s why everyone expects big changes from the 2024 Toyota 4Runner, which is about to receive a complete redesign. That model will bring significant updates and we expect to see it sometime in the second half of the next year.

At this point, details are still unavailable but we are pretty sure that the new generation will ride on the TNGA-F platform, which already underpins new SUVs like Sequoia and Land Cruiser 300. It should bring various improvements, starting from the lower center of gravity and a new suspension setup, which will ensure much nicer on-road manners.
However, we have no doubt that the 4Runner will remain a super capable off-roader. The new generation will also come with a rugged layout, with a proper suspension setup and lots of off-road features, such as a two-speed transfer case, locking differential, hill-descent control and many more. Naturally, count on big all-terrain tires, high ground clearance, proper approach and departure angle, crawl control and a proper four-wheel drive.
Exterior
When it comes to exterior design, the current generation aged surprisingly well. However, we expect a significantly more modern design from the 2024 Toyota 4Runner. The rugged and muscular overall shape will remain, but we also count on a completely new face, which should take a lot of inspiration from the aforementioned full-size relatives. Of course, exclusive styling details are expected as well.
In terms of dimensions, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner should remain the same. Even though it features a pretty modest wheelbase by segment standards, we don’t expect bigger changes. The same thing goes for overhangs as the company simply doesn’t want to sacrifice any of the off-road potentials just to get more interior space.
Interior
Therefore, the amount of passenger space should remain pretty similar to the current model. The front seats will be spacious and comfortable, just like the second row. On the other hand, the third row will be tight and not particularly adult-friendly. On the other hand, the cargo area should retain respectable numbers.

Big changes will come under the hood. The outgoing model uses a good-old 4.0-liter V6 which is bulletproof but which also lacks efficiency. That’s why we expect to see something much smaller in the new model. Some sources speculate about the new 2.4-liter turbo-four, which puts out 275 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. Others speculate about a hybrid powertrain, with a system based on the same turbo-four, and with a max output of around 350 horsepower.
Besides the engine, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner will also get a new transmission. The current 5-speed automatic belongs to the past, even though it comes with one of the best crawl modes around. We expect that the new model will feature an 8-speed automatic transmission. Base models will probably continue with rear-wheel drive, while part-time and full-time AWD systems will be available.

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner should arrive sometime in the second half of 2023. We estimate that base versions will cost around 40.000 dollars, while four-door versions of the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco will remain key competitors.
