The famous G-Wagen is certainly one of the most iconic SUVs ever made and even though it is predominately used by celebrities these days, it is still an unbeatable off-roader, which will soon get a completely new, different iteration. Namely, the German carmaker is preparing an all-electric version of the famous nameplate and front what we know so far, that model will come already in the next year, as the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG.

What’s good to know is that the all-electric G-Class isn’t a complete mystery. Namely, the company presented a concept version two years ago so we presume that the production version won’t be significantly different. We count on the same design approach, in a combination with various tech updates and upgrades that come as a result of the additional two-year development. Although with a completely different powertrain, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG won’t lose anything of its true nature, officials claim, whether it’s about the style or off-road capabilities.

As mentioned, the launch date should be scheduled for late 2023, or sometime in 2024.

2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG Design

As we’ve just mentioned, the overall design approach won’t be much different compared to the legendary, ICE model. We have the 2021 concept to rely on and we hope that the production version won’t bring radical changes. If the German manufacturer plays everything right, the production version will come with a well-known exterior design, famous for its boxy design, which hasn’t changed for decades. The familiar shape will be packed in a new suit, with lots of modern design solutions, as well as futuristic details that accentuate the model’s all-electric layout. For example, the new LED lighting groups will be notably different, particularly the headlights.

Although modern and all-electric, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG will stick with some traditional technical solutions, starting from the platform, which will feature a proper body-on-frame layout. With such a design, the new G-Class will remain rugger and off-road capable, though the new suspension setup will certainly have a positive impact on the on-road manners. Reports suggest a multi-link setup at the front and a solid axle on the rear end.

Interior

As for the interior, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG should stick with the company’s contemporary solutions. We saw the concept version two years ago and it brought a familiar dashboard design, pretty similar to other models in the lineup. So, we expect nothing significantly different from the other models in the lineup. The beauty of this design approach is that, despite the all-electric nature, the dash keeps a classic design, which is something that purists will definitely appreciate.

We expect that the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG will feature the same or very similar proportions as the G-Wagen and therefore, we shouldn’t see surprises in terms of the passenger space. Moreover, the battery will be placed under the floor, so things like legroom and headroom shouldn’t be sacrificed at all. This model will continue with the same five-seat configuration, which also offers relatively decent cargo space.

2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG Drivetrain

It’s not hard to realize that this will be the most interesting part of the new model. So far, the company has been pretty successful in terms of keeping the specs a secret. We still have no idea when it comes to power figures but on the other hand, we know that the company prepares a version with four electric motors. Each wheel would come with a dedicated electric motor, so we have no doubt that the all-electric G-Class will be pretty capable.

Still, this setup will be reserved for higher trim levels and we have no doubt it will cost a fortune. So, a more basic variant will also be offered. That model would feature two electric motors and, therefore, it would be notably more affordable.

As for the battery, some sources suggest that the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG will use the same technology as the EQS, including the same 108-kWh battery pack. We expect that this SUV is going to be able to make around 300 miles on a single charge. Moreover, we count on a pretty advanced battery technology, which includes a 350-kW charging speed. With such a speed, 80% of a battery with this capcity should be able to charge in about half ad hour.

2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG Release Date and Price

So far, the officials are quiet, but unofficial reports suggest that the sales could start already in the next year. In terms of price, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG will most likely be notably pricier than the gas-powered model, which starts at around 140.000 dollars. Key competitors will be all-electric off-roaders like Rivian R1S, GMC Hummer etc.
