Mazda’s mid-size sedan has been one of the most exciting models in the class for a very long time and even today, a decade-old design of the current generation draws a lot of attention. The model is still sold in some parts of the world, while the North American model was discontinued in 2021. Now it looks like we could see a big return, with the next generation of the elegant sedan. The new model is already in development and it is expected to hit the U.S. market as well, as the 2024 Mazda 6.
Although sedans are significantly less popular than they used to be, Mazda believes there is still enough room for its product. Therefore, the Japanese manufacturer is working on a new model, which will be far more upscale by every means. It will be a more luxurious and premium product, riding on a new, RWD platform that should make the ride even more engaging.
2024 Mazda 6 Design
The core of the new design would be the new architecture. Of course, we are talking about the same one that already underpins the new CX-60 and will also underpin the new CX-90. Compared to the previous model, the new one will feature a significantly different layout, with a longitudinally mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. With such a setup, there is no doubt that the new model will be able to offer an even more engaging ride, which would be on par with German premium sedans.
Naturally, the new platform would bring further improvements regarding the chassis and suspension setup, which would positively affect the ride quality. Furthermore, it would open up all kinds of new possibilities regarding new technologies, which would include all kinds of new powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid variant.
Naturally, we expect to see a completely new design. Once again, we would see a sleek four-door sedan with a bit of a sloping roof design, while the front end would be adapted to the brand’s latest design language, with a lot of parts shared with the aforementioned CX-60. All in all, the new model should bring an even more elegant and even more mature appearance, which would bring it even closer to the premium segment.
One of the expected changes is an even longer wheelbase compared to the third generation. The previous model featured over 111 inches in wheelbase and the new 2024 Mazda 6 is expected to go even further, which would provide an even sleeker design, with an even longer hood and similar things. Of course, this size increase would also be beneficial in terms of interior space, but we will get there in a moment.
Of course, a big part of this redesign would be a completely new cabin design. The previous generation was praised for its super-elegant design, with super fine materials and stylish dashboards. So, we expect that the 2024 Mazda 6 will be even better in this aspect. Once again, we expect to see a design approach that includes simple and elegant design, with a lot of attention to detail and plenty of advanced tech features.
As a mid-size sedan, the next-generation Mazda 6 would also offer a generous amount of passenger room in both rows, with the ability to accommodate adults with ease. Also, the front seats should be massive and supportive, designed for long journeys. Naturally, the cargo area should offer typical space for the class.
2024 Mazda 6 Engines
Some of the most interesting novelties of the next-generation 2024 Mazda 6 would be under the hood. From what we know so far, the new model would be offered in various variants, including gasoline, hybrid and diesel units.
Gasoline models would come with the new 3.0-liter inline-six SkyActiveX model, which would be good for about 280 horsepower in its base variants, rumors suggest. Moreover, we would also expect to see a turbocharged version of this engine, which would be able to put out around 350 horsepower.
The plug-in hybrid version was already presented with the CX-60 crossover in Europe. That system is based on a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and offers a combined output of 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.
Finally, we expect to see a diesel version offered in various markets outside North America. That model would use the company’s new 3.3-liter inline-six turbodiesel, which features a max output of around 254 horsepower and 404 pound-feet of torque.
All models would come paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
2024 Mazda 6 Release Date
The 2024 Mazda 6 still waits for official confirmation, so it’s better to stay reserved at this point. On the other hand, various reports suggest that the new sedan could arrive already by the end of this year, or in early 2024.
