2023 Ford Explorer front

The redesigned 2023 Ford Explorer is one of the most largest SUVs in the segment. This model offers a handsome design, impressive towing ratings, and good handling. Besides, it also comes with a 3-row of seats and enough room to fit seven passengers. On top of that, it continues to be a trusted name among a hundred SUVs.

Like the previous generation, the new one is available with all the latest in-car tech and many driver aids. Also, this SUV is one of the rarest that comes with four engines. Unfortunately, the Explorer has a lot of tough competition, and the main ones are the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and the Honda Pilot.

Is 2023 Ford Explorer a Good SUV?

Ford has made some tweaks to the new midsize crossover Explorer. For the 2023 year, this model will look bolder, featuring some visible upgrades, mostly on the front. Also, there are many packages available, allowing you to customize this SUV on your own.

A Sport Appearance package is available on XLT trim, and it includes 20-inch aluminum wheels that are very attractive coated in Carbonized Gray paint. This package also provides a mesh grille with Carbonized Gray accents as well as unique dual exhaust outlets. For off-road enthusiasts, the manufacturer offers the new Timberline trim with an interesting package. This model comes with a lifted suspension, all-terrain tires, and more rugged exterior styling cues. Overall, no matter which model you choose, you’ll get a unique family SUV.

Cabin Refreshments

The cabin of the new 2023 Ford Explorer is much more functional and comfortable. This SUV comes with three rows of seats, and there is plenty of room, at least for those in the first two rows. Unfortunately, the third row is still best suited for small children. The Chevy Traverse and the Volkswagen Atlas are models in the same class, but they provide more comfort.

On the technology side, the forthcoming SUV includes 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability. Overall, you can also get a much bigger 10.1-inch vertically oriented screen, upgrading to either the Platinum or ST. On top of that, every model has voice-activated navigation as well as a rear-seat entertainment system.

2023 Ford Explorer Powertrain Specs

Under the hood, the 2023 Ford Explorer will most likely be unchanged. That means we should expect the same engines that power the current model. A turbocharged (EcoBoost) 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine is deployed in the base variant, and it makes 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This unit is paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive (RWD) as a standard setup. Moreover, all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional.

The Explorer Hybrid is the best choice, in our opinion. This model consists of a 3.3-liter V6 engine and electric motor delivering 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque. It also retains a 10-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive optionally. The last engine is powering King Ranch, Platinum, and ST versions. Those variants come with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that develops 365 horsepower or 400 horsepower in the ST.
